I am Sandy Schmitz, a certified picture framer. I opened my gallery 33 years ago in the fully restored 1883 Historic Rickman building, at 415 6th Street, in Racine's Heart of the Arts district.
I have always had a passion for art and creativity! I love to brainstorm with my clients and create that special framed piece of art for their home or office. I have won many awards for unique picture framing within the Wisconsin Chapter of the Professional Picture Framers Association, as well as several other National awards.
My most memorable piece is one my brother and I created. The frame is made out of four Little League hardwood baseball bats inter-locked together to shadow box five baseballs. It hung for many years in the Picture Framers Hall of Fame and was on the cover of several magazines. Mickey Mantle's Steakhouse also called to express quite an interest in it.
I especially enjoy hand carving the mats with intricate designs and inlays to enhance old photographs, wedding pictures, or grandma's doilies. I love challenges—and, believe me, my customers have come from quite a distance with unique items to be framed. I have framed everything from a German dagger collection, thru ivory pipes, hole-in-one golf balls, beadwork from an old 1800s dress, a wedding veil, to an entire high school letter jacket with at least 50 medals on it!
Besides picture framing, I have two wonderful children and five terrific grandchildren who I love dearly. I also have had one great airedale named Harry. I now have a hilariously funny african grey parrot named Gracie.
I enjoy life to its fullest and have many diverse interests. I enjoy ballroom dancing, Latin and American. I have taken art welding, pottery and stained glass classes. I was in the play "Anything Goes", have taught dog obedience classes, parachuted once, and own a 1929 Model A Town Sedan, and a 1949 Plymouth Special Deluxe car that I love to drive around in on beautiful sunny days.
